New Splints and Weekend with Tammy

Our weekend started out with Maddy getting new splints on Friday at Scottish Rite. They took the molds for them last week and then we picked them up this week. She was having some problems with the knee immobilizers rubbing her skin. These seem to be helping a lot with getting the reds spots cleared up. They make her look so tall. Aaron and I were just in shock over how long she looks when she has these on.
Maddy got this duck from Dr. Griffith for Easter. It quacks. At first she was scared of it. When it would start quacking she'd push in away from her as fast and far as she could but now she likes him and gets a huge smile when he quacks at her.
Jessica bought this cute shirt for Maddy last summer. It could have been a dress on her at that time but now it fits great and looks so cute.
Tammy flew in on Saturday. We picked her up from the airport and went to the Ft. Worth Arts Festival. We also walked through this really cool fountain area they have down there. This fountain you can walk down inside of it on these stepping stone things.
Maddy loves water and she enjoyed the spray from the fountain and putting her hand in the water.
This is another fountain and my favorite one. It is so pretty and peaceful.

Tammy and Maddy at the arts festival. It wasn't as fun as I'd hoped because they were having some tryouts for Big Brother that day at the festival and it was super crowded. We saw some very interesting people there. Some of the booths had really neat stuff and some were strange, even disturbing. We stopped at Jamba Juice down there and got some drinks. Yum! Just what we needed after walking around on a warm afternoon.

Looks so fun! Great that Tammy could come down. I'm loving being outside. We're going camping this weekend!

good pics... Zach and I had fun at the arts fest... my friend Amanda was one of the emerging artists right next to Jamba Juice. Definitely a great place for people watching.

Great pics. I love that shirt from Jessica and the pic of her on the bed. She seems to be saying, "hey, look at me. Aren't I cute!" How are these splints different. They look like they may hold her hips out a bit wider. She is GROWING!

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
