The AC is on

For all of you who were horrified that the we had not turned the air conditioner on yet, Aaron and I finally decided to turn it on today. We are starting out trying to keep it on 85 and using just the upstairs ac and seeing how that does for making it bearable in this house. It was 80 degrees when we got up this morning so we kind of felt like we'd probably have to turn it on today. The nights aren't getting as cool as they were a week ago so we aren't getting a head start on the heat of the day anymore. So we'll just to see how high of temp we can get away with and make it bearable in here. Last year we never had our air conditioner turned down below 80 degrees. It worked pretty well. Yes, we were making better money, good money, last year, but we did not want to spend it all on a huge utility bill every month. The cost to heat and cool this place is ridiculous. Something we should have thought about a little longer and harder before jumping into it, but being from Colorado (and me not having lived in humidity since I was a kid) we didn't really understand the issues with cooling a house down here. In Ft. Collins we used a window ac unit and ceiling fan and never really had to turn the window ac on except in the afternoons. Mostly we just had the windows open all the time and the cool night mountain air kept us fine. Also we didn't consider how different heating and cooling a 700 sq. ft. place would be vs. a 1800 sq. ft. place. Oh well. Just the trials of home ownership I guess.
In other news, we are having some problems with the Isuzu again. Now I am going to quote what I have been told although I have no idea what these parts are or what it means: The linkage is not working right. Basically, it will not go into park. It stays in reverse. So you have to leave the car in neutral and be sure never to take it up to park or you have to get out and get under the car and move this piece manually to put it in park so you can start the car. This just started happening yesterday out of nowhere. So we'll have to get that fixed, but for now that's what I have to do to drive it around. We have a warranty on it that we bought in case something goes wrong with the transmission driving to the wedding, but they don't pay for those parts, of course!
Well, I'm off to rent a rug doctor at Wal-Mart. Some may remember me mentioning that the washer leaked everywhere while Brandon and Amanda were visiting. Well the carpet down there is horribly stained now. I'm sure the rug doctor won't take care of it for long but I'm just at the point that I want to see it cleaned up for a little bit. We had just rented a rug doctor and done all the carpets right before the washer leak happened so that's why we've waited so long to try to do anything about it. So I will go to Wal-Mart to rent a rug doctor for a ruined carpet in a car that does not go into park. It may be an adventure.

Holly, our house is ALL electric. I set the temperature on our a/c around 78/80 in the day. We also run oscilating fans. One blows all the time into the hall bathroom because there is no ventilation. In the summer, I will have it oscilating during the day. Our livingroom dining area is an open floor plan and I run a taller fan in there. Running fans helps you stay cooler at a higher thermostat setting, thus saving a few bucks. Nan

I feel so silly when in the spring and fall we will turn the heater on in the morning, then have to use the a/c in the afternoon. That is the problem about where we live. It can be 39 in the morning and 85 in the afternoon. We keep the a/c on about 78 most of the time. I would like it cooler, but A. is cool natured and we want to save on utilities also.

We broke down and turned it on Friday night- therm said 86 in the house- miserable. It's sooooo nice now. I am gritting my teeth for you and the Isuzu situation- grr!! I hope it works out and is not too expensive. It'll be nice to see the carpet all clean. I've never done that before, but will when we sell the house next year. Enjoy the coolness...we are!

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

We Need Your Prayers

Many of you have probably heard all ready, but Aaron and I got some devastating news today. Our baby will probably not survive outside the womb. They did an amneostasis this afternoon to test for chromasomal defects, which is what they think it is right now. I know I am spelling everything wrong so I hope what I write makes enough sense for everyone to understand what is going on. The specialist we went to see feels that it is triploidy or triamias 18. Those may not be the right names but they are two of the three chromasomal defects. The other is down's syndrome. He did not feel that it was down's. The other two defects are fatal so if we carry the baby to term it will not live but for a few days or hours if one of the defects above is the problem. We will know in 2days. If it is not one of those then we will have to go to a cardiologist and a genetic counselor. The baby had clubbed hands and feel and it's heart is not formed correctly and is not in the right place. Becau...
