First Haircut and Yummy BBQ

Cute dress Maddy wore to church today. It was rainy today and although not really cold, we built a fire anyway.
In this pic you can see how close Maddy's top teeth are to coming in. Come one teeth! I think we are all ready for you to just get here already.
Maddy is a little pyro. She loved just staring at the fire.
This is a picture of Maddy right after I trimmed her hair for the first time on Saturday. I just trimmed the front part because it kept falling in her eyes so bad and it was really starting to bug her a lot. So her first haircut isn't that dramatic but it just made her look older to me for some reason. Cute outfit courtesy of Aunt Tammy.
The weather this weekend was absolutely gorgeous. I am still sick from some sinus something that I got right after I ran the cowtown. I am so tired of being sick but I did get to enjoy the weekend by being outside some and I cleaned all the flowerbeds and got them ready to plant some beautiful spring flowers. Can't wait to do that. We have a tree growing in the front flowerbed by the house. I don't know where it came from. We took some leaves off of it and walked all around the neighborhood trying to figure out what kind of tree it is and we couldn't find anything remotely close. We want to transplant it into the yard. We've been wanting to get a tree or two for future shade because for some reason our house has no trees even though all the other houses around here have really nice big and shady ones.
Saturday night we went to eat BBQ at this place in Euless called North Main BBQ. It has "world famous" ribs and was featured on the food network. It was $12 for all you could eat. That included all the meats and sides plus sweet tea. It was so good. I ate way too much. After we ate we went to la Madeleine's for coffee and tea. The original plan was to get dessert there but after the all you can eat BBQ and the free ice cream most indulged in at the BBQ place no one was really hungry for dessert. It was so great to have a parent's night out and get to visit with friends. Rachel babysat Maddy and things went pretty well it seemed. Maddy can be a real grump in the evenings sometimes so I was glad she didn't have a super grump episode while we were gone.
This week is spring break at DBU. I have a paper due the Wednesday after spring break that I've yet to write one syllable of, so while I won't be sitting back and relaxing the entire time, I will enjoy the slower pace and Aaron being home every night.

Bummer. Sorry you're still sick. I am so excited to get outside and do yardwork. Invigorates me. Good luck with the paper. I showed Nat the storyboards you did- both he and Matt were mega impressed!

Maddy's haircut looks good. I do think that babies always look older after a hair trim. She is super cute as always. What is a storyboard?

Well Mom, I didn't really mention this to anyone, but I did the storyboards for the short film "Priscilla" that Brittany is making. You draw each camera shot so that the director and film crew can see how each is supposed to look. I wanted and art project and Brittany graciously let me participate.

Is there anyway I can see this? I am really curious now. Sounds like you did a good job!

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
