The Mystery of the Dead Possums and Other Random Occurances

Maddy trying some table food. Blackberry was yummy and she liked the bowtie pasta as well. Maybe it was the lemon flavoring in the recipe but she was a big fan.
So far we have gotten 19 of these gorgeous little treasures off of our tomato vines. There are 5 or 6 big tomatoes that will be ready in a day or two. Yum!
Our trip to the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science. This is in front of the nature building where we saw lots of animal dioramas. Maddy's favorite was the polar bear which was actually in the water exhibit in the science building.
Maddy perusing the menu at Snuffers. She enjoyed some cheese fries and hamburger bun.
Playing in the cabinets. Maddy has figured out how to open and shut cabinets and doors. To distract her from her mission to play with the blender, I got out this water bath pan and let her play inside of it. She had a great time.

Another good week of June. The only blot is that I have had some allergy problems and we have been finding dead possums in our yard. The first one I actually saw by looking out the window when I was opening the curtains in the morning. It was very small, probably a baby. At first I thought it was a huge rat but then realized that it was a possum. Aaron picked it up and disposed of it when he came home. Well a couple of weeks later I was in the yard getting the pool ready and I saw something by our fence gate. I went over for a closer look and it was a much more decomposed possum. Again, Aaron got to do that lovely chore when he arrived home for work. This time we had to put down bug killer to get rid of the maggots that had congregated around the carcass. Several theories about how/why the possums are getting in our yard. Our neighbors are always having large parties that start early on Saturday or Sunday morning and end late that evening. Maybe they are a cult and are throwing dead possums in our yard. Maybe the possums are attracted by our garden and then the dogs see them and they play dead which means nothing to them and so they maul the possums and kill them. The garbage man was angry that we put the dead possum in the trash the first time and threw it back in our yard later. Who knows. Hopefully our yard is not the new possum burying grounds.
On to a more appetizing subject. Last night we got to go eat at Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House in Dallas. Our good friend and mentor, Dr. Griffith, gave us a gift card there for Christmas. She came to our house to watch Maddy while we enjoyed our evening. We were seated by the chef, who filled the stereotype of a ball on legs. Then our waiter came and rattled off all the specials and information about the menu. I think it was a ten minute speech. We ordered crab cake for the appetizer and I got a house salad and Aaron got seafood soup. The crab cake was pretty pricey and I expected two or three on the plate. No--just one to split between us. When they said crab cake that's exactly what they meant. But it was very good. They had a Cajun remoulade sauce to go with it but I only had a taste because it was cream based. Then they brought out the soup and salad. For some reason I thought Aaron had ordered the turtle soup. He wanted me to taste his soup so I did. It was good but I said, "Don't you feel bad about eating a turtle?" He started laughing. Apparently, while I was off in my own lala land of looking at the menu, Aaron had asked the waiter about the turtle soup and turtle soup is actually made from the tips of the meat that they cut off of the fillet minions so it's not turtle but beef. Anyway, my salad was good too. Then they brought out the main course which was prime strip for two and asparagus. Let me just say right now that this was the best steak I have ever had. It was cooked to perfection and just melted in your mouth. I will probably never have steak that good again. I may just have to cross steak off the menu. Then the manager came out and said since it was our first time there they would give us a free dessert. Well the chef was probably sick of hearing all my questions about whether stuff had dairy in it by now but they didn't have any non-dairy dessert so I got some berries and Aaron got the cheesecake. He said it was the best cheesecake he ever had and he couldn't finish it all because he was so full. So we rolled out of Del Frisco's about 10lbs heavier. Then we went to the Galleria, a place we had never been before, to go to a store called Teavana to get Aaron the only thing he likes that has caffeine, Black Raspberry tea. Interesting store, but the mall was not that big of a deal to me. I always enjoy a fancy evening if I don't have to pay much for it but each time we get to experience the high life I am more convicted that I like simple better. Anyway it was a great evening and we really appreciate Dr. Griffith's gift to us. It sounded like she had a good time watching Maddy. They read lots of books and Maddy kept wanting to eat the bread from Dr. Griffith's PBJ. Funny girl.
Not a lot on the docket for this week. Just a couple of doctor appointments. It is cooler today so hopefully playing in the pool this afternoon will be refreshing. Yesterday it was way too hot.
Here is a video of Maddy harassing Houdini. Sometimes he is dumb as rocks but he is the gentlest dog and great with Maddy. They are buds.

Maddy you are too funny. I see that Houdini has less hair than he did before Maddy got hold of him. haha This is just great! I loved Maddy perusing the menu too. She looks like she is reading it for sure.

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

Another Sonogram

We went to the high risk pregnancy doc today for another sonogram. This time he could see all four chambers of the heart, the pulmonary valve, etc. In his words it looked "dramatically better". He feels there is still some slight compression on the heart and that we need to continue watching it. As of now he cannot see anything that is causing it and the MRI did not see anything either. He also felt that the hands were okay. They are not clenched fists at least as he first thought, meaning that the fingers aren't overlapping each other. Her hands are still in fists and she won't open them but he said he has had other babies that have not opened their fist in the sonogram but the hands have been normal at birth, so we still have a lot of hope for those little hands. He was able to get a better look at the face today, no cleft palate, so that is a huge blessing. The feet are still concerning. They are definitely clubbed but she is also not moving them. She is moving her...

More Miss Maddy pics

Here are some more pictures of Maddy. I know everyone is eager for pictures. We got to put her first little outfit on last night. She got out of the incubator bed and into a regular bassinet so she can now wear clothes and have her own blankies and stuff. It is great.
