SCREEEEeeeEEEEEeeeeeEEEEEEeeeeeEECH!

That's what a fire alarm sounds like going off at 5a.m. in your house on a Sunday morning. Most of you have probably heard about the little fire we had downstairs a couple of weeks ago. An aquarium light had a short in it and caught on fire. When the smoke alarms went off it was in flames. I got up first and went in to see what was going on. Talk about a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach. I saw the aquarium light was on fire (thought it was a heater at the time) and yelled at Aaron to get the fire extinguisher. We had never had a fire extinguisher in the house until about a month ago, when the home study safety inspection for the adoption required us to get one. So thank goodness for bureaucracy for once! I grabbed Maddy and a blanket and my phone and went outside on the front steps while Aaron put out the fire. I was just thinking that I should probably go ahead and call 911. I called down to Aaron and he said, "It's out!" He had to use the entire 5# fire extinguisher but it took care of the problem. He got the light and brought it outside. The smoke was AWFUL! It was 48 degrees outside because we'd had a cold front come through that weekend. Despite the chill we stayed outside for quite a while letting the smoke clear out. Thankfully because of how the house is built we didn't really get smoke or ash or anything in the bedrooms. I put Maddy back to bed and Aaron and I started cleaning up the aquarium and downstairs room. We worked for about 3 hours and then got ready to go to church. Went upstairs real quick before leaving and realized that the chemical from the fire extinguisher, ash, dust, and whatever had coated everything upstairs as well. So we spent all day Sunday wiping everything down. You wouldn't think that a 5 minute fire could make that big of a mess. We are still trying to finish up the cleaning downstairs. One thing that happened that was super funny was when Aaron got up and ran upstairs to get the extinguisher, he had a pillow on top of him I guess and I later found it upstairs in the play room/office area. Guess he was moving so fast it kind of just stayed on him for a while like you see cardboard on trash sticking on a car's grill sometimes on the highway til it slows down or changes directions. Here are few pictures of the aftermath, just to show you what a crazy mess everything was:
Did it just snow if here?

Black on the wall and ceiling above the aquarium. Some of it was burnt cobwebs from my poor housekeeping, but some was actually the paint. Need to get some magic eraser cloths and see if I can clean it up enough not to have to repaint that wall.

We had one fish in the tank and amazingly he survived all this and a 24 hour stay in a small plastic bowl until we found a new home for him with a prof at DBU. Fish is still alive and doing well.

Exactly  how we felt after doing all the clean up!

Wow, that is quite a mess from a small fire. I'm glad you all are okay though. And that the fish survived! I was actually wondering about the fish before I got to that part of your story. :)

Did not realize the new set up downstairs, or more accurately--I had not seen it. Don't remember that couch. Is it new? That was a LOT of stuff to wipe off floors, walls, furniture. UGG!

HOLY SMOKE! That was a close call. Thank goodness for smoke detectors! I fuss and fume all the time about lights and irons left plugged when not in use. We've still got our extinguisher we had to buy for foster care at the ready also. It will stay on it's hook too.

WOW!!! What a story! Sorry about the mess, but so glad nothing was terribly hurt. Drama drama. What's next for the Fletchers? : )

Fortunately, we've never had to use our fire extinguisher that we had to buy for the home study.

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building the

Another Sonogram

We went to the high risk pregnancy doc today for another sonogram. This time he could see all four chambers of the heart, the pulmonary valve, etc. In his words it looked "dramatically better". He feels there is still some slight compression on the heart and that we need to continue watching it. As of now he cannot see anything that is causing it and the MRI did not see anything either. He also felt that the hands were okay. They are not clenched fists at least as he first thought, meaning that the fingers aren't overlapping each other. Her hands are still in fists and she won't open them but he said he has had other babies that have not opened their fist in the sonogram but the hands have been normal at birth, so we still have a lot of hope for those little hands. He was able to get a better look at the face today, no cleft palate, so that is a huge blessing. The feet are still concerning. They are definitely clubbed but she is also not moving them. She is moving her

One Year Ago Today

One year ago today we found out we were having a little girl. One year ago today, the OB called us into his office and told us that Maddy was not going to survive. One year ago today God heard the prayers of many friends and family and he started working a miracle. One year ago today I thought I would never see my precious little girl alive. One year ago today I was so shocked I didn't and couldn't feel anything but disbelief. One year ago today, God started planning that today a little girl named Madeline Mae Fletcher would be by my side as I write this, talking and playing with her stuffed cow that Aunt Tammy gave her. One year ago today God set out to prove that he is faithful and he hears his people's prayers and that he still does miracles. Today is bittersweet because one year ago today our dreams and plans we had for our new life with our baby girl were destroyed. But one year ago today God started making a new plan to give us a different dream and a different plan.
