Rachel's Visit

 We had a fantastic visit with Rachel this weekend. My parents picked her up in Denver Friday night. I am sure they had a lot of fun Friday night and Saturday morning, but we didn't get to participate in that part. On Saturday we had a day filled with lots of family from both sides of the aisle. Aaron's dad was in Denver for a conference. He stayed at the ranch on Friday night so met us at our property late Saturday morning to see the house and how it was coming. My parents and Rachel met us there as well. We were also watching Theyben and Dustin for the day so the girls had some fun cousin time. We hung out at the property for awhile and then went back to our house in Divide for lunch. Aaron's Dad took off after lunch and the rest of us went hiking at Mueller State Park. I had never been before and definitely want to go back. We are considering getting a state park pass. It is so close we could go often. The visitor center was fun for the kids. THey had a animal track exhibit and little booklets the kids could use to do rubbings of different animal tracks. All the kids except Theyben really enjoyed doing that. THen we hike the Wapiti trail which was about a mile but it was plenty with the kids.
 It was a bit windy but very warm for October. The scenery was just beautiful. We hiked on a golden carpet of leaves.









 AFter the hike, we went back to our house and had supper. I made beans and ham. I am still learning high altitude cooking again so I just about didn't get the beans done. They were tasty though. After supper, Kelsay did some avant garde photography with my camera. Her pics follow:












 Everyone stayed the night and on Sunday my mom prepared a yummy roast dinner. That cooked in the crockpot while we went to church. Aaron and I had to volunteer in the toddler room. After church we met the new family that has just started at Maddy's school. They moved from Flower Mound. It was really neat to connect with them.
 After church, we headed home and the Meyers came over for lunch. It wasn't a super eventful afternoon but just full of great family time and laughter. We did go on a walk and it was a beautiful warm day. Tric and Lynn broke our hearts at the end of the time together but I will obviously let them tell about that when they are ready.
 Kelsay didn't quite make it to bed time. What a great, great weekend of family fun!

This weekend was a blast! Lots of fun. Yes, agree on the statement about the Meyer's. I am looking forward to many more adventures with the Fletcher Family.

Animal Happenings

 It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

 Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
