Rocking the Half and other stuff

It is a gorgeously warm day today! Maddy and I went on a walk to stretch out the sore muscles from the race yesterday.
Before the race we had to go to the expo on Saturday to pick up our numbers. We had like 15 bags to haul around plus Maddy because of all the relay teams from DBU. Fortunately Tricia and Nat were there with us so they took turns holding Maddy. We walked around and got free samples of stuff, mostly nasty sports drinks and bars, but we did get about 15 lbs of free dog food out of the deal and Aaron bought this awesome tape called K tape that he used for the race for his knee and feet. It is the tape that Kerry Walsh wore for the volleyball games during the olympics. Then we went to lunch with Nat and then came home and cleaned and cooked spaghetti and then TRicia came to eat. Brittany came to stay the night and we left at 5:45 to get to the race the next morning.
The race was really cool. I thought I was going to die but I ended up doing much better than I expected. I ran the whole thing and I did it in 2 hours 35 minutes and 7 seconds. I had to stop between mile 5 and 6 for a potty break. I was so annoyed but when pee leaks out when you cough it is time to pull over. Guess that's the consequences of having a baby. So that was a disappointment because there was a big line for the portapotties or portalets as they were officially termed at the race. When I stopped the 2:30 pace setter passed me. I thought I would never be close again after I saw her pass, but I was fortunately wrong. I ran the first couple of miles with Brittany and then we went around a curve and there were a bunch of people cheering and stuff and when I looked back I didn't see Brittany anymore I decided she maybe had to stop to tie a shoe lace or something or she got pulled off the course. Fortunately at miles 6 thru 8 there was a place where you ran down one side of the road and then ran back on the other. Right as I got to mile 8 I was really hitting a wall and wondering if I was going to have to walk and then Somebody yelled my name. It was Brittany! She saved the race for me. For some reason I guess that got me out of a bad mind set and I started feeling like I could do it again. So miles 8-about 10 1/2 felt awesome to me and I was able to pick up my pace quite a bit. Then at mile 11 my knee really started hurting but by that time I knew I was going to finish even if I was in a wheelchair for the rest of my life afterwards. I was able to keep a pretty good pace for the last two miles and I have never been so glad to see a finish line. At the end we got a finisher medal and a finisher shirt. They gave us these emergency aluminum blanket things that were awesome. At first I almost didn't take one because I was so hot, but it was cloudy and a little windy and misty and probably about 50 so after a few minutes I was really thankful for the blanket. I wondered around for a while, went to the car and changed clothes to non-sweaty ones that were warmer, got a snack and then Rachel called. She was at the finish waiting for me. So we decided to meet at the marathon finish line. We finally found each other and saw Aaron finish. His time for his first marathon was 4 hours and 16 minutes and 7 seconds. I was really proud of him. He ran with one of his students. The student kept stopping to much so Aaron finally left him the last few miles because the stops were making him cramp up. He got a finisher medal and a shirt as well. We also got pre race shirts so we got a lot of good stuff. After the race my knee was in some serious pain. They had a runners villiage where you could get free food like bagels, oranges, and granola bars. They also had chiropractor students giving free adjustments. I went and found Maddy. Tricia's roomate Rebecca graciously watched Maddy for the race since she dropped Tricia off for the race. She ended up having to watch her longer than she though she would so I really appreciated her taking care of her. Then I went and got food and Aaron was over there getting a chiro adjustment. He talked me into doing one too. Well unfortunately I got Lung (don't think that's how you spell it but htat is what it sounded like). Let's just say Lung was not to confident about his chiropracter ablities and neither was I. He tried and tried to pop my back and after not succeeding for a very long time he went and got his instructor and the instructor had to do it. At least it got done and for free I guess so I can't complain. After that we went back to grab all our stuff and then met Brittany at the car and went to Panera for some real food because we were all still starving. We were so sore. I had Aaron put some of his tape on my knee. Then some friends called and said we could come get in there hot tub if we wanted. That was like manna from heaven. I think it really helped us not be as sore today as we could have been. Anyhow it was a great experience and I would definitely like to train to run a 2 hour time or better for the half next year.

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

We Need Your Prayers

Many of you have probably heard all ready, but Aaron and I got some devastating news today. Our baby will probably not survive outside the womb. They did an amneostasis this afternoon to test for chromasomal defects, which is what they think it is right now. I know I am spelling everything wrong so I hope what I write makes enough sense for everyone to understand what is going on. The specialist we went to see feels that it is triploidy or triamias 18. Those may not be the right names but they are two of the three chromasomal defects. The other is down's syndrome. He did not feel that it was down's. The other two defects are fatal so if we carry the baby to term it will not live but for a few days or hours if one of the defects above is the problem. We will know in 2days. If it is not one of those then we will have to go to a cardiologist and a genetic counselor. The baby had clubbed hands and feel and it's heart is not formed correctly and is not in the right place. Becau...
