Jibber Jabber

Sometimes Maddy jabbers and jabbers just to hear herself talk. It is cute how she finds the sound of her own voice so entertaining. In this post I find myself jabbering for the same reason, but I'm not as cute.
A cold blustery day and Dallas, TX don't really seem to go together but that's the mix we've got here today and, despite all the promises from the weathermen, no snow-or precipitation of any kind.

Maddy got a "new" toy on Sunday. Someone from church thought she'd enjoy it and they gave it to her. She is absolutely in love with this thing. It is funny how the simplest toys are the best.
This past Saturday we went to Bodies the Exhibition with the students who are part of the medical/dental student association. They needed a chaperon for some reason and Aaron was the only prof available to do it that day so we got to go for free. I was a little iffy about going. Viewing plasticized, dissected human bodies really didn't sound like a great experience to me, but it turned to be very fascinating and not as gross as I expected. In fact it was mostly just amazing to see the complexity of the human body and the artistry of God's design. For those who saw or have heard of Body Works this was not the same thing. This was a smaller more educational exhibit put together by a guy who worked with the guy who did Body Works.

Aaron decided to feed Maddy some of his yogurt out of a big spoon. For some reason Maddy loves eating out of a big person spoon. She also loved big person yogurt but I think it gave her a really bad diaper rash so we won't try that again for a while.
Saturday is the Cowtown. I am so not in shape and not ready for this race but I am looking forward to my mom being here to run it with us, even though I am not looking forward to the embarrassment of being smoked by her. She is going to do awesome. She is the only one of us who had put in the training and effort needed to run a good race. Hopefully I will somehow qualify for the ascent in August--if I keep my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed. Also hoping for good weather that day. The weather has been so crazy who knows what we'll end up with.
One more thing is that I think I forgot to talk about the appointment we had with the hand team at Scottish Rite a couple of weeks ago. They just looked at her hands and said they were looking great. Yeah, thanks to her therapists at Plano Presbyterian who are willing to actually try to do some splinting right now! So we are supposed to see them in another 6 months but getting anything done as far as hands at SR is definitely on hold right now. They also referred her to a craniofacial doctor at Children's because of her recessed chin. Doctors have always commented that her breathing sounds slightly funny so they were wanting to get that checked out in case it was affecting anything. They were supposed to set up the appointment for us but I haven't heard a thing from them so we'll see how it all plays out.
Anyone else pumped that the US is winning the medal count in the Olympics right now? I am excited about watching skiing tonight.

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
