The Ides of March

I think we are kind of past the Ides of March now. Actually I've never really known what that term referred too. I just know Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15th and that it was during the Ides of  March, whatever that is. Anyhow, our Ides of March was not tragic in anyway except that I do have a sore throat right now, maybe strep, maybe not, but I'm on antibiotics just in case because I really don't want to pass it to Maddy if I do have strep. The strep test at the doctor's yesterday came back negative but I feel like I always do when I have strep and I have some white pockets of stuff in my throat, so..........Anyhow, I am feeling better today after taking my first dose of antibiotics, so on to happier and more interesting topics.

First, we have been potty training for a little over a week. Maddy is doing well, although I think we still have a ways to go on calling her officially potty trained. I still have to ask if she needs to go all the time, but she has done really well on not having accidents. She had about 2 a day for the first few days and then none on Friday while I was on watch. She did have an accident yesterday because we were at the doctor's office and I couldn't take her to the bathroom. Poor thing. I think she was kind of upset about it, so that is a good sign at least.

My birthday was last weekend. It is funny this year because Maddy is so excited about her birthday and birthday's in general. Aaron took her shopping for my b-day presents about a week in advance and every morning her first question when she woke up was if it was time for me to open my presents yet. By the way, this is one thing that always has made me really proud of Maddy. She does love receiving presents, but she has always had a very giving personality and has never (knock on wood!) had a fit when a gift is meant for someone else. She gets a lot of joy out of watching other people open their gifts, even other kids and she loves shopping for presents for people. After Christmas she wanted to go shopping for Christmas presents for her cousins again. So sweet. Okay, proud mommy brag session over.

Anyhow, I had a great birthday. It was very laid back, which was exactly what I was hoping for after all the go go go we've been doing this month. On Saturday, Rachel came up and we went to On the Border to take advantage of the 2 entrees, an appetizer, and dessert for $15. Khris came with Rachel and it was nice to see him again. It has been a while.

On Sunday, after church, Aaron and Tam made a delicious lunch of grilled steak, oven fired potatoes, roasted asparagus, and rolls. Yum! Since we are having a cake for Maddy and none of us wanted to eat cake for two weeks solid, we just got some mini red velvet cupcakes and had those for dessert. Then I opened presents and everyone was more than generous with their gifts. We just watched basket ball the rest of the day. I love that March Madness almost always falls on my birthday. I do have a few pictures, but I'm too lazy to get them out of the camera right now so I will put them in a different post.

This past week was exceptionally busy because we had to get all Maddy's therapy switched over from ECI to a private therapist since she's turning three and can't receive services from ECI anymore. All this private therapy has been a punch to the wallet for sure, but we just look at it as meeting our deductible faster and God provides every time. Two good things that have come out of switching over is that Maddy may not need OT at all. The therapist has been evaluating her over the past couple of weeks and she is doing things that are even slightly above her age group as far as fine motor skills so she may not qualify for OT at all. The OT is also working on making her much needed new hand splints. The other great thing is that we did a feeding eval. for Maddy because she just hasn't been progressing on the types of foods she eats. She still can't deal with chicken breast, raw veggies, and raw fruits, so this limits her diet in bad ways. The therapist said that she definitely thinks that the issue is chewing (not doing as much rotary chewing as she should be) so we are going to start working on that. I am so excited for her to be able to improve in this area. Also, we need to find a dentist and go see him or her as well, so you can see our doc appts. will not be slowing down any time soon. We have all three therapies on Wednesdays right now and I teach class Wed. night so that day wears me out.

In this picture Maddy is taking Eeyore shopping in an upside down potty chair. Maybe the potty chair is the shopping cart?

Even with all this work, we still have lots of fun in between. We did a digital scavenger hunt (you take pics of items on a list and text them back to the coordinator) with our small group on Friday night. It was so fun. I usually don't like this activity at all. I was honestly dreading it and just showed up to support all of the hard work that they guy who planned the activity put into whetting it organized. I think I had too many bad memories from a video scavenger hunt that I did with a college group at Tech that ended with them pulling a construction cone off the side of the road and taking it back to the student center with them. Anyway, it ended up being really fun and our team won! So that probably made it even funner. :) (Okay, I know "funner" is not a word but this is a place I get to put aside my English teacher persona and revel in using made up words and forgetting to proofread.)

This is long, but I really started writing all this because I wanted to remember the funny stage MM is going through right now and some of the stuff she says. She is starting to want to be part of the conversation, but her topics and takes on what she chooses to discuss are often hilarious and out of nowhere.  Here are a few examples:

At dinner:

Maddy: Is ketchup spicy?
Aaron: No.
Maddy: Is ketchup sweet?
Aaron: Yes.
Maddy: No! It's just good!

Maddy: Mommy, what are you doing?
Me: I'm eating.
Maddy: No! You're talking.

Playing on the couch:
Maddy (suddenly patting me on the head): Mommy, you're not a pumpkin.

Thanks for letting me know, I was starting to get worried about that.

Maddy (playing a game on my phone): What is that? That's 'sgusting (disgusting)!
Aaron: What was it?
Maddy: There was a booger on the phone!

And later, trying out her new word as I was washing off my makeup:

Maddy: Mommy, let me see your rag.
I show it too her.
Maddy: What's on there?
Me: That's my makeup. I'm wiping it off.
Maddy: 'sgusting!

ah! I love it! Maddy is such a hoot. I'm exciting she might not have to do OT- that would be nice. Hope you can get a sonic drink on Wednesdays to make the day better : )

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

Another Sonogram

We went to the high risk pregnancy doc today for another sonogram. This time he could see all four chambers of the heart, the pulmonary valve, etc. In his words it looked "dramatically better". He feels there is still some slight compression on the heart and that we need to continue watching it. As of now he cannot see anything that is causing it and the MRI did not see anything either. He also felt that the hands were okay. They are not clenched fists at least as he first thought, meaning that the fingers aren't overlapping each other. Her hands are still in fists and she won't open them but he said he has had other babies that have not opened their fist in the sonogram but the hands have been normal at birth, so we still have a lot of hope for those little hands. He was able to get a better look at the face today, no cleft palate, so that is a huge blessing. The feet are still concerning. They are definitely clubbed but she is also not moving them. She is moving her...

More Miss Maddy pics

Here are some more pictures of Maddy. I know everyone is eager for pictures. We got to put her first little outfit on last night. She got out of the incubator bed and into a regular bassinet so she can now wear clothes and have her own blankies and stuff. It is great.
