Maddy's Birthday! #3

Ever heard that country song that says, "I run my life.......or is it runnin' me?" Sorta feel like my life has been running me lately. But, anyhow, Maddy had a great 3rd birthday! This one really was the most fun yet and she has had some great b-day celebrations. I think it was so fun because she really knew what was going on. She was anticipating her birthday for a couple of weeks and that was very fun to watch and then to see how all that anticipation was fulfilled on her birthday. We started with the swing set in the morning (sorry my pictures are all out of order for some reason). It was so funny when we opened the curtains on the window to the backyard. At first Maddy was just looking out to see if she could spot the dogs. She couldn't and was about to pull away when the swing set caught her eye and she did a double take. It was really one of the most precious things I've ever seen. She just stared at it for a minute and then said, "That's a slide." I told her we had to eat breakfast and then maybe we would go do something fun in the back yard. She ate very quickly (Maddy quickly that is) and then looked at me and said, "Let's go to the backyard!" Tam was off work that day for a floating holiday, so we took her out and she had the best time trying out the swing set. Pictures are below in the post somewhere. It was so worth all the frustration and the late night of putting the thing together.
The only pic with all three of us looking at the camera. Yep. Still no models in this family.

After Aaron got home we headed off to Rainforest Cafe for Maddy's birthday dinner. Dr. Griffith and Angela Linam (some family friends) joined us there. Maddy order the "Kid's Castaway Pizza". I'm sure it was a cheese Totino's party pizza that they heated up and then charge an exorbitant amount for because it was served at the Rainforest Cafe, but Maddy ate on ton of pizza! I have never seen her eat like that before. She finished it all expect one slice. If you've never been to the Rainforest Cafe, I don't recommend going unless you can take a little kid with you and enjoy watching them watch all the mechanical animals move around. The food is okay. Definitely not worth what they charge, but again it was worth it because Maddy had such a good time. She especially liked it when the gorillas went crazy and her favorite animal was the baby elephant. She also got a balloon animal lady bug. She got a lot of joy out of that little balloon animal.

After we stuffed ourselves, we came back home for cake and presents. Rachel joined us at the house for the party. Tammy decorated a fabulous Clifford the Puppy cake. Maddy is really into Clifford right now and she was over the top please with the theme. In fact she didn't want to go to Rainforest at first because she wanted to stay home and have her "Clifford birthday". (cake picture is, again, somewhere down the way).

She blew out the candles like a pro.

Maddy really enjoyed the gift opening. I'd decorated all the gifts from us, or those I'd wrapped from other people, with red wrapping paper and dog stickers. (Couldn't find any Clifford stickers). Maddy called them her "puppy presents".

 Dancing with Meme.
Tam's amazing cake creation! Maddy was so full from her pizza that she actually didn't touch her birthday cake. :(

So Maddy had a great birthday! We always miss that more family doesn't get to come and enjoy, but everyone still makes it really special and everyone, near or far, pitched in to make her birthday the best yet.

Maddy looks so happy in every picture, except one. She looks exhausted in that one. ha What a fun time and who knows what all she will remember when she is older. You are our special blessing Maddy!

I love it!! She looks like she had a blast! My favorite pic is the one of her looking very serious, leaning on her fist. I think she just discovered the cure for cancer in that shot! haha. What a great birthday- awesome cake, Tam!

Yeah that 3rd birthday is the best when they know what is going on. The 1st and 2nd are for the parents, the third finally is for the kids. She'll be talking about her next birthday all year now since she will remember it.

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
