Dinosaur Valley

It seems that going out to Dinosaur Valley has become almost an annual spring trip for us. I love getting out of DFW and seeing the beautiful wildflowers growing along the road and in the park and Dino Valley is such a kid friendly park....well usually. This trip was a little different. I will know next time to check the park website before we go. With all the rain we've had the creek was running very high and all of the tracks were invisible. I was so disappointed. Not for us because we've seen it all before, but the Halls came with us and it was their first time and they didn't get to see any tracks. However, it seems our kids can have fun in just about any circumstances so they still managed to have a great time.
Maddy and Bethany got to play on the very edge of the creek. As Uncle Brad put it, Maddy decided to reconnect with her primal roots and paint herself in mud.

They also looked for shells along the creek bank. They each filled one of Maddy's shoes with rocks and shells they found interesting.

There was a little area where they showed what the prairie grass looked like back in the day.

Our kids were not very interested in taking traditional cutsie bluebonnet pics but they did enjoy their ice cream.


Thunderstorms started building up about this time. You can see them in the background. The kids played on the playground at the picnic area. We had time to eat some of our picnic. Then sprinkles began and lightning started to crack. So we took our picnic to our cars and headed home. It was fun to watch the lightening driving back.




There is usually a rock bridge in this area that you can walk on across the creek.

Always feel a little jealous of your fun outings. As always the account is great the pics are super. These kids are growing up and changing so much. Looks like a lot of "cousin" memories being made.

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

 Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. Geneticist

We went to see the genetic counselor this morning at 10. What we found out was hopeful for now, although we'll have to continue watching to see how thing develop. She said from what the doctors had communicated to her and from the initial results of the fish test (test for the chromosomal defects) and because I have been feeling the baby move every day, right now she thinks the baby may have a condition called Amyoplasia Congenita. This is a condition where the baby develops normally except for the hands and feet which can be corrected through orthopedic treatment, at least to some extent. People with this condition can live normal lives. This is obviously the best news we've had all week and much better than where we were a week ago. However, this isn't a diagnosis. We still need to watch the baby's development and also get the complete results from the chromosomal testing. BUT we are so thankful that today we have good news and something to hope for. Animal Happenings

 It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...
