My Crazy Experiments and Maddy Flirts with Death..well at least serious injury

Well did you really think I wasn't going to experiment with homemade shampoo and deodorant just because I said I wasn't in my last post. Well you don't know me very well if you believed that. After researching all that stuff, even though I was kind of hesitant about it, I just couldn't leave it alone. I had to try it out. First I tried a thing that sounded wonderful--a dry shampoo. I hate washing my hair with water right now because it goes absolutely insane and is completely unmanageable for several days after I wash it. If I could somehow wash my hair without water that would be great because I could keep it straight and under control like I want. So experiment number one was under way. The recipe simply said 1/2 a cup of cornstarch. You were supposed to sprinkle the cornstarch in your hair let it sit for a few minutes and then comb it out. I thought 1/2 a cup sound like a lot so I decided to be conservative and use a 1/3. I went to the bathroom and proceeded to rub a 1/3 cup cornstarch through my hair. When I got done I stood up to let it sit as directed and discovered that I was completely gray. The picture gives you a bit of an idea but my hair was seriously the hair of a 60 year old!! I combed and combed and combed but when I went to bed my hair definitely still had a grey sheen and I was afraid to wash it because we all know cornstarch and water make a paste and if there was something worse I could think of than grey hair it was glue hair. May hair is back to it's normal color now and I did not wash it. It has tons of body (maybe from all the combing?) and looks very clean. I decided that the recipe must have just been giving an amount to set aside for multiple uses? I will have to ask my friend who uses dry shampoo and has gorgeous hair. Anyhow, if I use less next time I think I will actually really like this method of cleaning my hair.On to experiment two. I couldn't get the idea of trying homemade deodorant out of my head. I felt like it wouldn't be a very good product but I was so curious about what it would look like, how you would put it on, etc. that I had to make some. So I got the ingredients that I didn't already have (c0conut oil) and proceeded to make the mixture. To my surprise I love this stuff. It doesn't smell like anything and I don't smell like anything when I put it on and it works all day if you shower every day. Of course I haven't yet had the opportunity of testing how it works in 100 + Dallas heat and humidity but for now it is good. I was wearing men's deodorant because I felt like the women's deodorants were all too wimpy and not getting the job done and I have to say that I would vote for the homemade stuff over what I was using. It is a little messy to put on but I like it so I'll give it a go for a while.
Now that you are all thinking I'm a big, crazy wierdo for trying this stuff I will also reveal my terrible mothering skills. This is Maddy playing dress up yesterday. She was so cute with this clip in her hair.
Okay, on to the story of how we nearly had to visit the emergency room today. So I called David's Bridal to see if my dress for Ethan and Jenna's wedding was in because I hadn't heard from them. Sure enough it was there but no one had called me telling me that so I decided to run up there and get the dress. Dress was great, perfect fit, etc. I came home and set Maddy in the very center of the bed as indicated with the X below. She has always been perfectly fine and safe and not really able to move very far from the middle of the bed. I stepped into the closet for maybe 20 seconds to grab the shoes I'd bought earlier to see if they matched the dress. When I came back out, Maddy had somehow worked her way along the dotted path marked on the bed and was sliding off head first right by the nightstand. I started rushing toward her knowing I was not going to make it in time to catch her just praying that she wouldn't hit her head on the nightstand. Well God was definitely protecting her because she slid off in the tiny little space between the bed and nightstand and landed on her head and then flipped the rest of her body over in such a way that she never hit the nightstand at all. She cried of course but only for about a minute and I avoided going into cardiac arrest but it scared the crap out of me. All I could do was thank God over and over she was okay. She came so close to cracking her head open on the corner of the nightstand. I didn't realize that she was getting so mobile and able to cover so much territory in so little time. That is a praise God right there but not when she tries to kill herself by diving off the bed. So lesson learned about that for sure.
Time to cut off the ramblings. In honor of Earth Day take some time to enjoy God's creation this weekend. If you live close to a national park, admission is free now through Sunday. I am so sad that I'm not close enough to take advantage of this.

This is just wild!!!!! I have laughed and laughed. The pictures are a riot! I am truly surprised that you like the deodorant. I thought it would be really gooey and messy. The grey-ish hair is just great! So thankful Maddy did not get hurt. Whew! What a day.

doesn't it give a weird texture to your hair, though? Not soft and silky?

actually I think Holly's hair is softer this week than before. I'm not good at judging body and all that crap but when I run my hand through her hair I think it is softer right now.

Animal Happenings

It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. We ended up having to feed quite a bit of hay this winter as we had snow cover from November to end of March. We got our barn built about January and began collecting more ...

Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). A couple named Comma and Mabel lived in the cabin when the CCC was building t...

We Need Your Prayers

Many of you have probably heard all ready, but Aaron and I got some devastating news today. Our baby will probably not survive outside the womb. They did an amneostasis this afternoon to test for chromasomal defects, which is what they think it is right now. I know I am spelling everything wrong so I hope what I write makes enough sense for everyone to understand what is going on. The specialist we went to see feels that it is triploidy or triamias 18. Those may not be the right names but they are two of the three chromasomal defects. The other is down's syndrome. He did not feel that it was down's. The other two defects are fatal so if we carry the baby to term it will not live but for a few days or hours if one of the defects above is the problem. We will know in 2days. If it is not one of those then we will have to go to a cardiologist and a genetic counselor. The baby had clubbed hands and feel and it's heart is not formed correctly and is not in the right place. Becau...
