2 weeks down....4 weeks and 4 days to go


I can't believe it's only been two weeks since Maddy's surgery. The weeks have seemed long since we've had to keep her from putting weight on her left foot. She is finally starting to default to crawling when she wants to move. This is very helpful because I feel more comfortable taking my eyes off her for a few seconds. We still have to watch her like a hawk though.
Surgery went very well and very long. They told us two hours and it ended up being three. They moved several bones around and pinned them together to hold everything in place. They also had to cut several tendons and move those around to hold different things together. The doctor felt like the surgery went exactly as expected so that was good to hear because that was not the case with her hamstring release last April.She did much better coming out of anesthesia this time too. She did not have the oxygen stablization issues she had last time. By Friday afternoon we were all definitely ready to get home.
The last two weeks have stretched my creativity for sure. We color, watch movies, go on walks, read books, cook (Maddy sits in  chair and mostly watches), give the dogs a bath while she watches (this is daddy's activity to do with her), and whatever other silliness we can think of as shown in the video.
Last weekend we went to stock show. Seeing baby chicks was the highlight of the outing for Maddy. Cows followed in a close second. We also got to see goats, chickens, rabbits, a miniature horse show, and a milking parlor demo. We had been cooped up for about a week trying to get the swelling Maddy's foot to go down (which it did about Wed. or Thurs. of last week) so the outing was a great mental break and break from the house for all of us. A friend told me about a place in Lewisville where you can skate with your kid in a stroller every Wednesday morning for $3. I say BRING IT ON.

Whooo, makes me dizzy watching. I hate being dizzy! I don't know why, but it is instant sick.

Hang in there, when she is running half-marathons with you someday you won't even remember this stuff.

I just think you two are the perfect parents for Maddy. It seems like you do such a good job of helping her and trying to do what's best for her. I feel sorry for her not being to get around though!

I am glad you are keeping a record of all the adventures of the Fletcher's. Maddy has a LOT of fun times despite the drawbacks of her condition. I am with Kristina, you 2 are the perfect parents for this little girl.

Animal Happenings

 It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

 Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
