Maddy is 1 month old today! When I think about the NICU and all the doctor visits it seems like a much longer amount of time. When I think about just her, I can't believe that she has already been here a whole month! She has changed so much already. We had a really relaxing weekend of just hanging out with the baby. Aaron took lots of naps. :)
We went to Scottish Rite to get recasted on Friday. That went so much better than the first appointment. We were there an hour max. Maddy got upset about them stretching and casting her, of course, but because the appoitment was brief she did very well and didn't get so worn out. She was a little fussy that evening, probably sore from the new stretch, but nothing like the first casting. She has been gaining weight. It is hard to tell how much she actually weighs with the casts coming off and on all the time but from her weight at Scottish Rite without the casts this week and last week, we figured out that she'd gained 2 oz in between. It is hard to know her actual weight because both times they weighed her with her onsie and her diaper on, but that is not the important part. The important part is that she is gaining. That's all we really need to know.
We are probably going to have to go through a big hassle with our insurance this week. We need to take Maddy to a pediatric neuro specialist for her possible tethered cord issue. Problem is that no one who does this is in our network. Out of network is a lot more expensive. So we have to try to get an in network referal for this doctor. If you feel like you have just read a whole paragraph in Chinese--join the crowd. Insurance drives me crazy but I am going to have to get used to dealing with it. By the way, I don't know what our final bill is for Maddy's NICU stay but what the hospital is charging the insurance equals most people's yearly salary. Yikes!
There is a distant light at the end of the tunnel for school. Aaron only has two biochem lectures left and this is the last week he will have to teach labs. I know he is excited about that. I am about a fourth of the way done on writing my paper. It is not due til the 11th so I figure if I can just crank out a page a day I will be fine.
Big thunderstorms here today. More south than here right now but we are having rain and thunder and lightening.

one whole month! I think she looks bigger. You guys are doing such a great job and keeping a great attitude. I know you're blessing the people around you with it, for sure. Prayers continue for you three.

I guess that hair is here to stay if she's hung onto it for a month! :-) It won't be long until you won't even be able to remember how small and tiny she is right now!

P.S. I despise insurance as well...grrrrr!!!! But I guess in situations like this its still a blessing, even though a lot of hassle.

I agree that she looks bigger. Hope all the schoolwork comes along faster and easier than planned. Hopefully I'll be over in a few weeks! Spades anyone?

Animal Happenings

 It looks like the last update I posted on animals was about going to the sale barn and getting cows. As a reminder we got a calf/cow pair and a "weaned" calf: Chloe, Midnight, and Mooey. Chloe and midnight are some kind of black angus mix and midnight is part Holstein. Midnight and Mooey will eventually be our meat cows. We hope to AI Chloe sometime in the near future for another calf. Midnight, her calf pictured below (much littler in the pic than he is now) is a very good looking steer. He could go to the fair if he wanted. This is a picture of him getting out of his fence and coming in the yard. He still gets out from time to time. Having a mama calf keeps both the steers in line though. They are much better about not getting crazy, unlike some other steers we could name from the past, but won't. Getaway to Ticks Bend....I Mean Beavers Bend State Park

 Back in April, we decided we needed to do a short family getaway after the semester was over. The last time we'd been on vacation just to vacation (not going to see family in CO) was when we went to San Antonio when Maddy was 3 months old. We found Beavers Bend State Park close to Broken Bow, OK and decided to go there. We booked a cabin in the state park and eagerly awaited the day we could take off for our getaway. We left on Sunday afternoon and stayed through Tuesday afternoon. It was short, but so fun and relaxing. We had no computer and no cell phones while we were up there. We just got to enjoy being around each other and the beautiful scenery.  We built a fire and roasted some marshmallows. Also popped some jiffy pop. Aaron had never done one of those before.  This is a 100 year old cabin they had at the visitor center. I like the mud chinking ( I think that's what it's called). Raccoons

We've been plagued with the nasty devils this week. We accidentally left dog food on the porch one night. Fortunately, Aaron saw the raccoon sneaking a snack before he headed to bed. We chased it off but woke up to find one of our chickens had been it's victim. I have been super careful to make sure no food has been left out but the raccoon has been back. I heard a terrible confrontation in the woods on Tuesday night between a raccoon and SOMETHING in the woods. The SOMETHING whimpered as the raccoon hissed and spit. I hope that whatever the SOMETHING was it is ok. It sounded like a dog so I am wondering if it was a coyote vs. raccoon showdown. One of our cats stays out all the time and I thought at first it was her. I was out banging a bucket with a stick and yelling trying to get the raccoon to leave. Turns out the cat was on the deck cool as a cucumber. We had been letting Whiskers and kittens stay outside as well but now we go through the nightly routine of putting them in ...
