Yesterday was Aaron and I's 6th anniversary. Wow! A lot has happened in 6 years. This year we took an anniversary trip/family vacation to San Antonio. We left Friday afternoon after Maddy's PT appt. It took forever to get out of Dallas because of traffic. After about an hour and a half in the car we stopped at West. Maddy needed t eat and a nurse at Scottish Rite had told us awhile back that there was a place famous for kolaches in West. It is called the Czech Stop and it is very good. We split a fruit kolache, each had a meat kolache, and each had a maple twist. (As you can tell, Aaron was doing the ordering.) We got back on the road, ate supper at Wendy's in Austin and then had to sit on the road between Austin and San Antonio for probably 30 minutes because they landed the life flight helicopter on the road ahead of us. We have no idea what was going on because when we got up there, there was no sign of a wreck or anything. We finally got to our hotel at 9. We were so tired when we got there we just took a shower and went to bed.
The next morning Maddy woke us up at 7:30 which is really sleeping in for her, and we started getting ready to go. We packed up and then had breakfast at the hotel and then headed for the Alamo. At this point my pictures are out of order so I'll just write about the pictures and what we did but we went to the Alamo first, then did the riverwalk, and then went to the caverns. This is the jellyfish formation in the Natural Bridge Caverns. It's real name is the King's Throne but it looked like a jellyfish to us. These caverns were very impressive. It was a great afternoon activity because it was about 70 inside the caverns and felt great. We couldn't take the stroller in so we had to carry Maddy the whole way and that was kind of scary in some places because the trail was really steep and slippery in some areas. The caverns were discovered by some students from St. Mary's College in the 1960's. The deepest point that we went to was 180 feet under the surface. We were both very impressed with the size and formations of the caverns. Definitely something worth doing if you are ever in the San Antonio area.
This is a view from the riverwalk. We did this after the Alamo and it was starting to get pretty hot by the time we were walking around down here. We stopped for lunch at this place called Rita's on the River. We wanted Mexican food and it was the only Mexican place we saw (we saw more later after lunch). So we stopped and decided to eat inside because Maddy needed to cool off. Well as we stepped through the door we smelled a horrible stench. We got seated and we could still smell this smell that was like vomit. We were just discussing leaving when the waitress brought us our chips and salsa. Then I guess we felt obligated to stay so we didn't leave. Also they didn't have ac, only big fans blowing but it was still comfortable. I thought the shrimp fajitas we got were delicious but Aaron wasn't really impressed so lunch was not enjoyable for him. Later I saw a Mexican restaurant on the other side of the riverwalk that looked like it would have been a better place, but oh well. After we ate we walked some more and saw lots of wildlife. We saw some baby ducks and a couple of cool looking cranes. We also stopped at La Villita which is a place where artists have their shops along the river walk. It was neat but we didn't spend long doing that because it was to hard to negotiate the tiny shops with our huge stroller.
The first thing we did was go to the Alamo. It opens at 9 and we were there right as it opened so we didn't have to negotiate the crowds that were starting to gather as we were leaving.
We spent several hours at the Alamo. The actual building I think of as the Alamo didn't take long. I knew it was pretty small but I was surprised by how small it actually is in real life. I have wanted to go see the Alamo for years so I really enjoyed this part of the trip. We also went through the long barracks where they had a bunch of the history and different displays. We went out to the courtyard and heard a guy tell the story of the Alamo. The landscaping around it was so pretty and with all the shade and being able to go in and out of different buildings where it was cool, none of us got too hot while we were there.
All in all it was a great trip. Yesterday, Rachel came over and watched Maddy so that Aaron and I could go to dinner. We came back and played scrabble with Rachel afterwards. We were laughing at ourselves because the major portion of our dinner converstion consisted of us talking about how we needed to get back in shape, dieting, exercising, etc. The romance is still alive. :) Oh well.
